Important Change in grant rules 16th May 2011:

Grant applications for Solar water heating now come under the Better Energy scheme from SEAI and are open for applications as of the 16/05/11. There is only one rate of payment which is now a flat rate of €800 per installation no matter what size.

Some things to be aware of before applying for the grant

If you are looking to avail of the Better Energy Grant there a few things to look out for to make sure you are eligible:

1. Your house must have been built before 2006. The SEAI use the MPRN number on your electricty meter to verify the age of your house so to qualify your electricty meter must have been installed and switched on before the 31/12/2005.

2. The grant is now subject to the solar installation being compliant with the renewable energy requirement in Part L of the Building Regulations. This states that renewable energy systems need to produce 10 kWh of renewable energy per m2 of the floor area of the household per year e.g. if you have a house measuring 150m2 you will need a solar system to produce 1500 kWh per year. This means that the bigger your house the bigger the renewable energy requirement and the bigger the solar system you will need to install. This can be a little counter intuitive sometimes if you have a large house with few people living there so we will advise you on your options in this regard. Sometimes it can be cheaper to go without the grant in these cases.

To check what your house would require to qualify for the grant you can check the downloads below. We have compared the energy outputs from the DEAP software used by SEAI with the more accurate calculations produced by TSol solar design software. We did this to illustrate how the outputs of evacuated tube systems are significantly underestimated by DEAP and to give you an idea of what the systems are actually capable of producing.

3. As part of the grant process you will need to get a BER assesment of your home completed after installation. This measures the energy requirement of your home before and after the energy efficency measures you choose are installed. This is an extra cost to you but there is a grant of €80 available for this. Costs of BER assessments range from €100 – €150 (less the €80 grant) depending on your location. We have partnerships with BER assesors around the country and will arrange this as part of your installation if you wish.

We will confirm the new details here when we receive guidance from SEAI.
